- CHAPTER I
-
-
-
- YOUR FIRST STEPS TO WEALTH
-
-
-
-
- The Mail Order business can make you incredibly rich.
- Truly wealthy. Of all businesses, Mail order has perhaps
- the highest potential for fast growth. It gives you enor-
- mous freedom to devise, create, expand and have a lot of fun
- while you're doing it, but let's face it, Mail Order is
- work. It is not a magic wand that will make you wealthy
- with a quick wave of the hand. Mail Order takes determina-
- tion, thought, effort, knowledge and, at times, a spot of
- courage.
-
- Determination stands high at the top of that short
- list. If you are determined to succeed, really determined,
- nothing will stop you. There will be no adversity, no set
- back, no adverse criticism that will stop you. You will
- succeed. Make up your mind on it before you go any further.
- There is no room in this business, or any other for that
- matter, for people who believe they will fail - and this,
- before they've even started.
-
- Charge up your Determination Battery and before you can
- believe it possible, you'll be pushing a lot of money into
- your bank account.
-
- Thought is next on the list. Think and then act. The
- first is no good without the second. Any successful person
- will tell you that thought, followed by action is what
- brings success. Thought tells you where and how to act.
-
- It's inevitable that you will make mistakes somewhere
- along the line, everyone does, but don't let the thought of
- making mistakes or of making a fool of yourself, prevent you
- from doing something you really want to do. The old saying
- says that you can't bake a cake without breaking eggs, and
- the cake we're contemplating baking is huge.
-
- Here's two more old adages:
-
- Look before you leap.
- He who hesitates is lost.
-
- Go with the second one. Take a chance. The odds are
- that you'll succeed. If you go with the first one and spend
-
-
-
-
-
-
- all your time thinking about it, you'll never get anywhere.
- When you're faced with a problem, think about it, come to a
- decision as quickly as possible, and then act. Right or
- wrong.
-
- My old Daddy used to say to me, "The two saddest words
- in the English language are -'If only'."
-
- Don't be an 'If only' person.
-
- Lord Byron said, "Tis better to regret the things that
- you've done than the things you haven't done."
-
- Next on the list - Knowledge. Knowledge is hard to
- come by. You can read and gain a certain amount of knowl-
- edge, - I'm trying to pass some of mine on to you, - but
- the most valuable knowledge is called Experience and you
- will gain it as you go. It's all yours, it's private and
- it's like a hoard of gold nuggets. You've earned it, and
- try as hard as you might, you can't give it to someone else.
-
- So we come to Effort. Effort means long hours. It means
- time spent on the telephone, time spent traveling and in
- your case, time spent in front of the computer. It can mean
- missing that special movie on television, or that ball game.
- It can mean a meeting with a manufacturer instead of a day
- at the beach. (It wouldn't be the first time I've managed
- to combine those two).
-
- Effort is required, even if it's merely going to the
- Post Office to mail out your next batch of letters, but it's
- pleasant to know that the returns for that effort can be
- very, very satisfying. There's no greater satisfaction than
- to open a pile of envelopes and watch the money pile up on
- the table.
-
- Finally, Courage. If you are presently employed, it
- is wise to maintain that employment until your Mail Order
- business is strong enough to fully support you. Even at that
- time it takes courage to leave a job at which you may have
- worked for many years. There will always be in your mind, or
- that of your spouse if you're married, that worrying, lin-
- gering doubt as to the wisdom of leaving security. It takes
- courage.
-
- To give you a better idea of what it really takes to
- become involved, let's take a more detailed look at the
- business of Mail Order.
